Former Indian cricketer Atul Wassan believes that the man behind the stumps deserves credit for half of the wickets claimed by the promising slow bowlers in the form of Kuldeep Yadav and Yuzvendra Chahal.

The young wrist-spinning duo shared as many as 30 wickets in between them in the ongoing series against South Africa.

Barring the Pink ODI at Wanderers Stadium in Johannesburg, the South African batting line-up has been found wanting in all the games of the series.

However, based on the evidence from the stump mic, the man behind the wickets has been equally responsible for all the wickets the two leggies claimed.

MS Dhoni constantly guided the two young spinners regarding their lines, lengths and speeds throughout their spells. Often, MSD predicted how the batsmen are going to operate in the coming deliveries and a majority of times, the most experienced man in the team has been spot-on.

I think half of the wickets should go to Mahendra Singh Dhoni. He is just amazing behind the stumps. Before every ball was bowled, he knows what a batsman going to do. These guys should bow down and touch his feet. These guys not experienced and Dhoni was doing the homework for them. Dhoni should be credited for this,” claimed Atul Wassan according to NDTV.

On MSD’s overall impact on the game:

Having said that, the talismanic wicketkeeper-batsman has been criticized regarding his contributions with the bat.

In the three outings so far, MSD has only managed 69 runs. Apart from the 42 runs at Jo’burg, MSD has been lukewarm while taking the guard.

Wassan, on the other hand, is a firm believer of the fact that ones criticizing MS should look into his overall impact on the game.

This includes advice to the captain and bowlers, supervising field changes, reviews and electric wicketkeeping skills.

“I heard Dhoni saying ‘Ye abidhar niklega. Ye abb idhar marega’. And the same thing was happening. Chahal and Kuldeep were following Dhoni’s instructions and those were working for India, If people can criticise Dhoni for not getting runs, they should probably look at this factor also,” concluded Atul Wassan.
