With his impressive performances in the Test series against South Africa, Jasprit Bumrah proved his credentials as an all-format premier pacer for India. Wary of the busy itinerary further, Chairman of Selectors, MSK Prasad, intends to monitor Bumrah’s workload in the future.

The Mumbai Indians star was already a regular feature for India in limited-overs cricket. The unorthodox pacer displayed tremendous potential in red-ball cricket. It then becomes a matter of utmost importance for the selectors to prevent Bumrah from injuries due to exhaustion.

I am delighted with Jasprit’s performance. We always had confidence in his abilities as he had done well for Gujarat in Ranji Trophy. But now our primary goal is to monitor his workload very carefully with so much international cricket ahead. We need to be careful that he is not over-used,” commented MSK Prasad according to TOI.

Bumrah along with his partner Bhuvneshwar Kumar were rested prior to the upcoming Trination T20I series between India, Sri Lanka and Bangladesh.

After the gruelling schedule of IPL, Indian team flies to England to participate in a long tour. Later this year, India travel to Australia to compete for the Border-Gavaskar Trophy.

MSK Prasad pace attack India's tour of South Africa
Chief selector MSK Prasad feels India’space-attack is perhaps the best to have toured South Africa in years.

If you look at his action, it is a rare one and he can be prone to injuries. We need to use him for the important Test series coming ahead. For each and every fast bowler, the balance of workload is very important and the high-performance team will be monitoring it closely,” added Prasad.

On India’s Bench Strength

The other key personnel rested for the tri-series are Virat Kohli, MS Dhoni and Hardik Pandya. The likes of Vijay Shankar, Deepak Hooda, and Rishab Pant get an opportunity in the absence of the star players.

I attribute our team’s success to the nice bench strength that we have. We have multiple players for each spot. Like we have rested Hardik Pandya for the Sri Lanka series and we want to create a backup all-rounder in Vijay Shankar,” concluded MSK Prasad.
