It alludes to a brawl between Australia’s Andrew Symonds and India’s Harbhajan Singh during the second Test between the two countries in Sydney in 2008, during which the off-spinner allegedly yelled racist insults at Symonds, describing him as a monkey.’

That incident affected Symonds deeply, and he spoke about it in a recent interview with Brett Lee on The Brett Lee Podcast.

“I felt a sense of stress and obligation for the people who supported me and claimed to have heard what was said. Harbhajan had called me a monkey in India during a previous visit.”

And I went right after the game, summoned him from the locker room, and spoke with him outside. That’s when I said, “Boss,” and that was the end of it. “It was, without a doubt, the most challenging task I had ever faced.” This encounter with Harbhajan had occurred earlier in the day. “We’d won the Test in the last over; it was an unbelievable test; I’d never seen anything like it,” he remarked.

“We basically had two beers and went directly into meeting with match referee Mike Procter,” he said afterward, referring to the aftermath of the incident. 5.30-600 p.m., the game was over.

“The next morning, we didn’t depart until 1 a.m. Not only were the celebrations spoiled, but then there were the falsehoods… you know what I’m talking about.”

Andrew Symonds joined the IPL’s Deccan Chargers from Hyderabad on February 20, 2008, for a cost of US$1,350,000, making him the league’s second most valuable player at the moment.
