Australia National Cricket Team captain Pat Cummins was extremely upset after his side faced a crushing defeat at the hands of the South Africa National Cricket Team in the 10th match of ICC Cricket World Cup 2023 at the Bharat Ratna Shri Atal Bihari Vajpayee Ekana Cricket Stadium, Lucknow on Thursday, October 12.

The Proteas outplayed the Aussies in all three departments and hammered them by 134 runs to register their second consecutive win in the ICC World Cup 2023.

It was Australia’s biggest loss in the history of the World Cups with the previous one coming in 1983 by 118 runs against India in Chelmsford. It was the first time Australia lost their first two World Cup matches since 1992 and it was also the first instance of Australia losing 4 consecutive World Cup matches.

Australia lost their World Cup 2023 matches against India and South Africa and in the last edition of the 50-over World Cup, they faced back-to-back defeats against South Africa and England in their last two games.

Speaking after the match, Australia captain Pat Cummins lauded centurion Quinton de Kock for his batting masterclass. He said:

I thought Quinton (de Kock) batted really well, couldn’t get a breakthrough. From where they were, we were quite happy with 310, thought it was chaseable. Looked like hard work out there tonight, their bowlers bowled really well, think it nipped around a bit more under lights.”

Don’t think much needs to be said tonight, everyone’s hurting – Pat Cummins

Pat Cummins was further asked if it would have been easier to bat first to which he responded that they need to find ways to win irrespective of batting or bowling first. He said:

“Really hard to say, if we want to be challenging in this tournament we need to find ways of performing regardless of batting first or second.”

Pat Cummins made also an emotional remark, saying that everyone in the Australian camp is hurt and they need to make some amendments and bounce back strong. Pat Cummins said:

Don’t think much needs to be said tonight, everyone’s hurting, we’ll try and take a couple of days off and then make amends to come back stronger in the next one. There’s a few things we need to tidy up.”
