England Test head coach Brendon McCullum said Eoin Morgan will go down as one of the influential leaders in the world of cricket after several reports suggested that the England white-ball captain is set to announce international retirement.

Morgan, who played 16 Tests, 248 ODIs and 115 T20 Internationals, is likely to hang his boots for the England team over lack of form and concerns over fitness. The Dublin-born cricketer led England to their maiden title in the 50-over format after they beat New Zealand on boundary count in the 2019 World Cup final.

Eoin Morgan likely to retire from international cricket – Reports

Morgan has been leading the white-ball side in both formats for close to a decade and is often credited for the success after England was in turmoil when they failed to qualify for the knockout stage in the 2015 World Cup.

Morgan is facing a lean patch with his batting as we haven’t seen the best of him for more than a year. The England skipper’s batting average in the shortest format has been dipping with every year passing, recording 16.67 in 2021.

Early in January, Morgan played the first two T20I matches against West Indies but was subsequently ruled out of the five-match series owing to a quad injury

Morgan registered two successive ducks in the first two ODI matches against the Netherlands and missed the final game of the series due to his groin injury. It was reported that Morgan was on the verge of quitting white-ball captaincy but reports from The Guardian mentioned that the 35-year-old will retire from international cricket.

McCullum lavished praise on Morgan for revolutionising England’s white-ball structure under his steward leadership and grooming the current lot of star players like Ben Stokes, Jos Buttler and Jonny Bairstow.

“Eoin Morgan is going to go down as one of the most influential figures in world cricket for the approach he’s undertaken since taking over the England captaincy and what he did with the side. He changed the entire attitude and style of cricket that they played,” McCullum told Sky Sports.

“To have won the World Cup and to have taken those guys into a journey. Guys like Jos Buttler, Ben Stokes and Jonny Bairstow are absolute superstars in world cricket right now.

“All good things must come to an end and there’ll be a time when him and I will sit down and enjoy a nice bowl of red and reflect on what’s been quite a remarkable career for him,” he added.

There is no announcement from Morgan as of now but if the Ireland-born cricketer decides to retire from the game then Jos Buttler could replace him as England’s next white-ball captain.
