Senior India cricketer Dinesh Karthik reveals that he was subjected to “thousands of abuses” on social media during the WTC final. Dinesh Karthik wasn’t a player in the game, which India lost, but he was part of the game as a commentator.

The wicketkeeper also donned the unofficial hat of a Weatherman as he regularly gave updates of the weather at the Ageas Bowl, where the game between India and New Zealand took place. The match which would extend into the sixth day (Reserve Day) lost more than two days to rain and bad light.

Thousands saying ‘Wake up, wake the hell up’: Dinesh Karthik

Dinesh Karthik, who has impressed everyone and received adulation for his work as a commentator in the game, says that netizens took his role of updating them with weather news too seriously.

He added fans abused him a lot when he said that it was raining or the weather situation was grim. The Kolkata Knight Riders cricketer says it was difficult for him to wake up early in the morning and put out weather news on social media while also receiving abuses of people online.

“‘Weatherman’ is a very double-edged sword; I’ll put it on record. The first day, a lot of praise, the second day, very happy, the third day they started abusing me. I wanted to sleep; I can’t wake up every day at 6’o clock to give a weather report,” Dinesh Karthik told sports presenter Gaurav Kapoor in his podcast ’22 Yarns with Gaurav Kapur’.

“They took it too seriously on social media. They started abusing me saying, ‘Wake up! What the hell are you doing?’ in far more choice words that I can’t use on the podcast, just for not waking up, which was hard but you have to live up to their expectations, I guess. I got abused for saying it was raining.

“Two things I got abused for were for saying it’s gray and it’s raining and the fact that I couldn’t wake up early to give the news. And a lot of it, I am talking about thousands of abuses. Not one or two, that I would have let go. Thousands saying ‘Wake up, wake the hell up’,” he said.

Dinesh Karthik continued his commentary stint after the WTC final into the England-Sri Lanka white-ball series, and the ongoing England-Pakistan series. The Tamil Nadu batsman will be seen in action next during the UAE leg of IPL 2021, to be held in the UAE in September-October.
