Former India captain Sunil Gavaskar opines that the Indian batters will be at ease facing the likes of James Anderson, Stuart Broad, and other England pacers in the upcoming 5-Test series against the hosts.

The Indian batters will have their apprehensions going into the high-profile Tests series – the visitors lost 4-1 on their previous tour in 2018 – especially after a disappointing show in the WTC Final loss against the New Zealand pacers.

However, Sunil Gavaskar points out that in the series, which will start in early August and run till mid-September, the pitches will be much drier than they were in June. Hence, if the Indian batsmen see off the initial spells, he believes, the pacers will be rendered less threatening going deep into the game.

“Indian batsmen need not worry about the series against England in August-September as the sun will be out by then and the pitches will be drier and with the greatest of respect, if Jimmy Anderson and Stuart Broad don’t get wickets in their first spell, they struggle in their next spells,” Sunil Gavaskar wrote in his recent column in The Telegraph.

This talented team need to make this a truly Indian summer: Sunil Gavaskar

Sunil Gavaskar is confident that this “talented” Indian side can own this English summer, which “begun with disappointment” for the WTC Final loss. The 71-year-old commentator reckons the visitors will need the right attitude to succeed.

“The English summer has begun with disappointment [for India] but when disappointment fuels determination then fortunes can be turned and that’s the attitude this talented team need to make this a truly Indian summer,” the former opener stated.

The Indian players are currently on a three-week break before they resume their practice. The first Test is scheduled to commence on August 4 at Trent Bridge; followed by Lord’s, Headingley, Kennington Oval, and the series will conclude in Manchester.
