New Zealand captain Kane Williamson has opened up on lifting the Test mace for the first time in his career. Kane Williamson led New Zealand to glory by making the nation the inaugural World Test Champions as they beat India convincingly by eight wickets. But the 30-year old revealed that the Test mace is heavier than one could assume.

The number-one ranked Test team has historically received the Test mace as a significance to their achievement. However, the ICC decided to award it to the winners of the World Test Championship decider in Southampton. Kane Williamson starred in both the innings by scoring 49 and 52* in the first and second innings, respectively to guide New Zealand to victory.

Kane Williamson highlighted it was a different feeling to hold it for the first time and stated it was heavier than most people think. The right-handed batsman noted the mace did not feel like a real one until they got their hands on it.

“I mean we’ve never been able to hold it before so it was a different feeling. It is heavier than you think. We didn’t know it was real till we got our hands on it!,” Williamson told the media after beating India.

Kane Williamson hailed the team combination that New Zealand currently has, claiming it has a good mixture of youth and experience. Williamson stated that Ross Taylor has been for plenty of years now and still works hard, while BJ Watling delivered a lot for the team before retiring. He hopes that the duo will remember winning the WTC final as the most memorable moment of their career.

“There’s a real mixture in the side of newer players and experienced players. You got guys like Ross (Taylor) who is clearly our most experienced. He has been there for so many years and achieving it like this after all the hard work from everybody, the likes of your Ross Taylors and BJ Watlings. These guys have given so much to our game. It is pretty satisfying that they will reflect on this as perhaps one of the greatest moments in their career,” he added.
