Former Indian wicketkeeper batter Deep Dasgupta shared his thoughts on four teams making it to the playoffs in the ongoing Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 season. Deep Dasgupta stated that Chennai Super Kings (CSK) shouldn't be overlooked despite their current position in the points table.

The race for the top four spots has intensified among teams in the ongoing tournament. Rajasthan Royals (RR), Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR), Lucknow Super Giants (LSG), and SunRisers Hyderabad (SRH) occupy the top four positions in the table. The Chennai Super Kings are in fifth place in the standings.

The Ruturaj Gaikwad-led team has won and lost five games each. The Chennai-based team has 10 points to their tally with a net run rate (NRR) of +0.627. With the league expanding to ten teams, franchises have typically required a minimum of 16 points to secure a top-four finish after the league stage.

I'm Not Going To Count Them Out Now -  Deep Dasgupta

In a video shared by ESPNcricinfo on X (formerly known as Twitter), Deep Dasgupta was asked about RR, SRH, KKR, and LSG making it to the playoffs. Dasgupta suggested that the CSK team shouldn't be overlooked, considering their experience.

"Would it be safe to say RR, SRH, KKR, and LSG will be in the playoffs?" asks the anchor.

"Well, I don't know. I mean, you asked this pre-match as well, isn't it? And I have a feeling CSK with all that experience. Yeah, I mean, I'm not going to count them out now," Deep Dasgupta said.

The Chennai Super Kings must win at least three of their remaining four matches to remain in contention for a playoff spot. If they win all four remaining league matches, the defending champions will secure a top-four finish with 18 points to their tally at the end of the league stage in the IPL 2024.

The Super Kings must improve their net run rate to secure one of the top four slots if multiple teams finish with 16 points. They will finish the league stage with 14 points if CSK loses two of their remaining four matches, reducing their chances of ending in the top four to slim mathematical possibilities.

Chennai faced a seven-wicket defeat against the Punjab Kings (PBKS) in their recent match. Ruturaj Gaikwad was the top scorer for the Super Kings, with 62 runs off 48 balls, including five fours and two sixes. Punjab chased down the 163-run target with 13 balls to spare at MA Chidambaram Stadium.
