Former Indian player Parthiv Patel was effusive in his praise for Indian skipper Rohit Sharma for backing out-of-form players.

Pace bowler Avesh Khan made his ODI debut against West Indies in the second match at Port of Spain in Trinidad. He conceded 54 runs from 10 overs without any wickets and was benched for the final game. Moving to the T20I series, the Madhya Pradesh pacer leaked 31 and 47 runs in the second and third games respectively.

It was skipper Rohit Sharma and coach Rahul Dravid who came to the youngster’s rescue amid diminishing returns. Avesh himself admitted that Rohit gave him the confidence to get better and it was evident with his match-winning performance of 2/17 in the fourth T20I, which was followed by 0/20 in the final game.

Parthiv, who played under Rohit at Mumbai Indians from 2015 to 2017, said Rohit is known for backing players to overcome their poor performance.

“I have played under Rohit Sharma’s captaincy at Mumbai Indians and the one thing that stands out is how he backs players who aren’t performing. He is vocal about them even in public and in press conferences, as we saw with the case of Avesh Khan. Rohit backed him even after four failures and he delivered with a Man-of-the-Match performance,” Parthiv said on his YouTube channel.

“Rohit believes in taking instinctive decisions on the ground rather than pre-meditating them. When a crunch situation arises, he takes a call according to the situation and it is one of the main reasons why he has won five IPL trophies with Mumbai Indians. India have also won multi-national tournaments like the Asia Cup and Nidahas Trophy under Rohit’s captaincy,” he added.

Rohit Sharma will lead India in the Asia Cup 2022 in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) at the month end.
