On Thursday, December 14, Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) announced the appointment of legendary all-rounder Sanath Jayasuriya as the ‘cricket consultant’ for a period of one year.

Recently, there was a lot of chaos in Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) following the poor performance of the team in the ICC World Cup 2023. The entire Sri Lanka Cricket Board was sacked, and Arjuna Ranatunga was appointed as the head of a seven-member interim committee to govern the SLC.

Later, the Court of Appeal restored the SLC management headed by Shammi Silva, but again after a few days, the Sri Lankan parliament unanimously passed a resolution, calling for the sacking of the SLC, with both the ruling and opposition parties supporting it.

However, now things are getting back to normal in Sri Lanka Cricket. A new selection committee has been formed which will be led by Upul Tharanga. The five-member committee also has former players Ajantha Mendis, Indika De Saram, Tharanga Paranavitana, and Dilruwan Perera on board.

Sanath Jayasuriya will be responsible for ensuring that SLC national programs achieve an optimum level of professionalism – SLC

In an official statement issued by the board, SLC said that the role of Sanath Jayasuriya would be to ensure that the SLC national programs achieve an optimum level of professionalism and that all players and coaching staff are monitored.

“Sri Lanka Cricket wishes to announce the appointment of Mr. Sanath Jayasuriya as the full-time ‘Cricket Consultant,’ for a period of one year, with immediate effect,” SLC stated.

“Under this role, Jayasuriya will be responsible for ensuring that SLC national programs achieve an optimum level of professionalism and that all players and coaching staff are monitored in order to deliver excellence.”

SLC further said that Sanath Jayasuriya will oversee the training and coaching requirements of all the teams.

“Accordingly, he will oversee the training and coaching requirements of all teams aligned with the high performance center, the implementation of individual skill development strategies in line with the ongoing player development plan, and the compliance of all player reporting aligned with the athlete management system of the SLC.”

Notably, SLC has been allowed to play in both bilateral cricket and ICC events despite the suspension. However, the funding of Sri Lanka Cricket will be controlled by the International Cricket Council, hence, the next year’s Under-19 Cricket World Cup has been shifted to South Africa from Sri Lanka.
