The former Indian opening batsman Virender Sehwag backs the ex-coach of the Indian team Anil Kumble to be the National Selector of the India National Cricket Team. Virender Sehwag strongly believes that Kumble is the right candidate. And also, believes that he got the stature to be in the selection panel.

Anil Kumble was the coach of the Indian team between 2016 and 2017. He stepped down from the role just a day after India lost to Pakistan in the final of the Champions Trophy. It was believed that there is an alleged rift with captain Virat Kohli. He was replaced by Ravi Shastri, who got the extension after his tenure.

Presently, MSK Prasad is the Chairman of India’s senior selection committee. A lot of questions have been raised about the panel’s efficiency with former greats like Sunil Gavaskar terming the Prasad-led selection committee as “lame ducks”. The selection procedure during the ICC World Cup 2019 also came under the scanner.

“When Anil Kumble became the captain, he came to my room and said ‘go and play how you play as in the next two series you won’t be dropped’. That kind of confidence he gave. And also, I think he is the right person. He can become a national selector,” Sehwag told reporters on the sidelines of the launch of The Selector app.

However, Sehwag also said that he doesn’t think that Kumble will agree to do the job right now since the chairman gets Rs 1 crore per annum. Comparing the cricket stats, the current selection panel will come no closer to the former spinner of India.

“BCCI needs to raise bar as far as pay is concerned. Then, a lot of players will be interested,” said Sehwag.

Under Anil Kumble, the Indian National Cricket Team had tremendous success across the formats. He made quite a few surprising calls, which yielded success to the Indian team. However, he failed to have a good relationship with the Indian team skipper Virat Kohli, which saw him being ousted from his position.
