After a fine start to their title-defence, things are going downhill for the Chennai Super Kings in the last few days. Earlier this week, they had to suffer their first defeat of the season when they lost by 37 runs against Mumbai Indians. It was Chennai Super Kings’ first defeat after they won their opening three games. Chasing 170, the defending champions came up with a disastrous batting performance and managed just 133 for 8 against their bitter rivals.

At the end of the game, skipper MS Dhoni had rued to the absence of fast-bowlers ‘who could hit the dick hard’ in the team. Super Kings have already lost the services of Lungi Ngidi and David Willey for the entire season. While Ngidi suffered an injury before the start of the season, Willey pulled out of the tournament due to family reason. After the game against Mumbai Indians, the Super Kings had suffered another blow with their allrounder Dwayne Bravo getting ruled out for two weeks owing to a hamstring injury.

Losing Bravo has further depleted the Super Kings’ pace attack which does not have any overseas frontline pacer. Bravo has been Chennai Super Kings’ most reliable pacer in the death overs and losing him for two weeks in a league where one game can derail entire season can hurt the team.

And as if all these setbacks were not enough, Super Kings have another reason to worry ahead of their clash against Kings XI Punjab on Saturday. Kings XI Punjab’s star opener Chris Gayle has regained full fitness and is likely to return to the playing eleven in the upcoming game.

Gayle, who has been in red-hot form this year, missed the previous game against Delhi Capitals. However, he trained at Chepauk on the eve of the game, and Mayank Agarwal later confirmed that the West Indies opener was fit.
