The former India skipper Sourav Ganguly turned 46 on Sunday.

Dada, as Sourav Ganguly is fondly known in the cricketing fraternity, is one of the greatest batsmen and captains to have played for the country. He started his Test career with a bang, scoring centuries in his first two Test innings in 199 against England.

He soon established himself in both Tests, and ODIs. Less than four years on, days after the match-fixing crisis rocked the cricketing world, Ganguly was made the skipper of the side. He went on to become the country’s most successful leader before MS Dhoni bettered his record.

It was Ganguly who had led India to the famous as well as the miraculous come-from-behind triumph against the all-conquering Australians in 2001. A couple of years later, his 144-run knock in Brisbane had set the tone for India’s 1-1 series draw Down Under.

Ganguly always will be remembered for his immense role in making the team believe it can win overseas and the team did. Under him, India registered a berth in the final of a Knockout tournament in 2000 and had won the same event a couple of years later. In 2003, the Ganguly-led team made it to the final of the World Cup.

He also led India to a historic Test series victory in Pakistan in 2004. What made Ganguly even a better captain was the way he led the team from the front? The southpaw ended his career with 7213 runs in 113 Tests and 11,363 runs in ODIs from 311 matches.

He called it a day after the 2-0 win against Australia at home the following year in 2008.

Meanwhile, with the legendary skipper turning 46 on Sunday, the cricketing fraternity made sure to wish him.
