Red-hot Virat Kohli, on Monday, broke the record of most runs by an Indian skipper in a Test series in England after his century in the third England vs India Test. Former India skipper Mohammad Azharuddin previously held the record.

Kohli scored his second century of the series to put India in command at Trent Bridge.  The England bowlers toiled throughout the day as Kohli assumed complete control for much of his innings. The India skipper made 103 before being dismissed by Chris Woakes. Prior to that, Kohli had missed another century when Adil Rashid dismissed him for 97 in the first innings.

The ongoing series is panning out in start contrast to what happened on the last tour.

The last time Kohli had visited England, James Anderson & Co. had given him a hard time. In 2014, Kohli had endured a torrid time in England, scoring only 134 runs from ten innings, as India lost the series 3-1. He scored 1, 8, 25, 0, 39, 28, 0, 7, 6 and 20 in the five Tests and finished the series with an average of 13.40.

The right-handed batsman was troubled mainly on the off stump line in England, as he ended up edging those deliveries behind the stumps. Virat was caught behind the stumps on six occasions (once by the keeper and five times in the slip cordon).

Anderson had made current India skipper his bunny, dismissing him four times in six innings.

However, Kohli has proved that the failure was an one-off.  He started off with a classy 149 and a gutsy 51 in the first Test at Edgbaston. He fell cheaply in both the innings at Lord’s but bounced back in style at Trent Bridge. In the first innings, he scored 97 in tough conditions. He looked set for a hundred but was caught by Ben Stokes at slip off the bowling of Adil Rashid while going for an expensive cover drive.

However, he made amends for it in the very next innings by slamming his 23rd Test ton. And it helped him add yet another feather to his already illustrious cap.

Kohli has now gone past Azharuddin to become the India skipper with most runs in a Test series in England. Azharuddin had scored 426 runs during the tour of 1990. The right-hander now has 440 runs for the series.

With two more Tests still to play, Kohli also has a strong chance to surpass Rahul Dravid’s tally of 602 runs for the most by an Indian in England.
