The recently-concluded ICC Women’s T20 World Cup final was nothing less than a dream for women’s cricket. The women’s cricket changed forever as a record 86,174 fans checked into the iconic Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG) to watch India take on Australia in the final.

Five years in the making, the highly-anticipated occasion lived up to its billing by setting a new attendance record not just for a women’s sporting event in Australia, but for women’s cricket globally. In the six previous editions of the tournament, the highest final crowd came in 2009 when 12,717 watched England beat New Zealand in Sydney.

But the huge number of fans who attended the game might regret their decision a little bit after it has been revealed that one of the fans who attended the final has been tested positive for coronavirus.  According to a release by the Melbourne Cricket Club (MCC), the patron watched the game from Level 2 of the Northern Stand in section N42.

“The Melbourne Cricket Club (MCC), as ground managers of the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG), is aware that a person who attended the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup Final at the MCG on Sunday March 8 has now been diagnosed with COVID-19,” stated the release from the MCC.

“The Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) has advised of the patron’s diagnosis and has classified it as a low-risk of spreading COVID-19 to surrounding members of the public and staff. The patron sat on Level 2 of the Northern Stand at the MCG in section N42.

“The DHHS recommends that those who were seated in N42 at Sunday’s event should continue to go about their normal routine, with an increased focus on hygiene measures, and should any flu-like symptoms emerge to consult with a medical professional,” the statement added.

The MCC has cleared that it is working with the Government and the DHHS closely and have been advised to operate normally hosting major events as of now. They have also decided to undertake intensive cleaning of the N42 section affected.

“The MCC is working closely with the Government and the DHHS and the advice is to operate business as usual, including hosting major events, however, are prepared should that change at any stage. The MCC is committed to maintaining a safe and healthy environment for those visiting the MCG and as a precautionary measure have undertaken intensive cleaning of the affected section,” the statement further read.
