From Sarfaraz Yawning To Yuzvendra Chilling: Best Cricket Memes Of 2019

Updated - 31 Dec 2019, 12:50 AM

The social media has not only bridged the gap between the players and the fans but has also given the latter an opportunity to have some fun at the expense of the cricketers. The year 2019 not only saw some stunning action on the field but also some hilarious action on the social media as well.

There are thousands of brilliant cricket memes out there but it was not possible for us to include all of them. With the year now all set to end, here are few of the memes that stole the show in 2019:

The Mankad incident (Credits: Twitter)

In this year’s Indian Premier League (IPL), ex-Kings XI Punjab skipper Ravichandran Ashwin had caused a stir by dismissing Rajasthan Royals’ Jos Buttler by Mankad. Ashwin had sent Buttler back without giving him a prior warning which caused a huge uproar within the cricket fraternity. While he was within his rights to dislodge the bails, the method was deemed against the “spirit of the game.”

And following the incident, the fans came up with some hilarious memes on the incident. Here are few:

4. Chilling by the boundary:

When India took on Sri Lanka in their last league fixture of the World Cup in Leeds, they were already assured of a place in the last four. The Men in Blue were relaxed about the game and it was pretty much evident with the way Yuzvendra Chahal was relaxing near the boundary ropes. Given a rest ahead of the semifinal, the spinner made the most of it.

Donning cool shades and lazing next to a couple of water bottles, Chahal snoozed on the barrier on the edge of the field. His laid back look and relaxed posture immediately caught Twitter’s attention and was conveniently turned into memes.

3. Pakistan fan’s reaction:

Pakistan team is infamous for its poor fielding and it showed little signs of improvement in this year’s World Cup. And a hilarious reaction from a Pakistani fan during the tournament pretty much summed up the Men in Green’s poor fielding standard. It was Asif Ali who made the mistake when Pakistan took on Australia as he missed a couple of catches.

He first dropped Australia skipper Aaron Finch when the latter edged one to Ali in the slip cordon area. To make matters worse, the ball sailed away for a boundary. Finch, batting on 26, went on to score 82. The second one was a sitter near the boundary rope as Ali gave a reprieve to centurion David Warner.

And while Ali dropped the catch, the cameraman focussed on a Pakistani fan standing behind him. With hands on his hips and disappointment written all over his face, the fan not only summed up his fellow fan’s feelings but also became a huge meme material.

2. Virat Kohli’s notebook celebration:

When India took on West Indies this month, the T20I series became extra special due to the incident that transpired during the first T20I in Hyderabad. When Virat Kohli hit Kesrick Williams for a couple of big shots towards the end of the match, he left everyone surprised by his celebration. Kohli pulled out Williams’ famous notebook celebration out of the blue.

It was only after the game that he revealed the reason behind the celebration. Kohli said it was a revenge because Williams had done the same celebration after dismissing him during a T20I in 2017.

1. Sarfaraz Ahmed yawning:

When India and Pakistan lock horns on a cricket field, the players can hardly relax. With so much at stake, players from both sides give their best to make sure their country ends up on the right side of the result. However, former Pakistan captain Sarfaraz Ahmed was perhaps not aware of the importance of the fixture as he was seen yawning behind the stumps when his side were playing against India in this year’s World Cup.

Unsurprisingly, Sarfaraz Ahmed’s action had triggered a meme fest on Twitter as fans from India and Pakistan joined hands to make hilarious memes. And when Pakistan suffered a heavy defeat in the game, the meme changed into heavy criticism for the ex-captain.
