When James Neesham hit the second ball of the super over bowled by Jofra Archer for a huge six on the leg side, it looked like New Zealand would finally lay their hands on the World Cup. After the 100 overs could not decide a clear winner, the game was pushed to super over. England scored 15 runs off those six balls with Ben Stokes and Jos Buttler hammering one boundary each.

In reply, New Zealand started really well. The first ball was a wide before James Neesham took a double. On the second ball, he hammered Archer for a maximum to put New Zealand on top. With seven needed from four balls, New Zealand were the favourites to win the thrilling clash. The equation was finally down to 2 runs from the last delivery.

And it once again ended in a heartbreak for New Zealand. Martin Guptill was run-out while he was trying to take a non-existing double. With neither the first 100 overs nor the super overs being able to decide the winners, England were declared the winners for hitting more number of boundaries.

And while England stars started celebrating their historic feat, New Zealand players were once again left  to rue another world Cup final loss. They were on the wrong side of the result in 2015 too. Following the game, a gutted James Neesham took to Twitter to express his feelings. In a series of tweets, the allrounder made it clear just how devastated he is.

“Kids, don’t take up sport. Take up baking or something. Die at 60 really fat and happy,” wrote the Kiwi star.

In another tweet, he said that the defeat hurts before congratulating England as he wrote:

“That hurts. Hopefully there’s a day or two over the next decade where I don’t think about that last half hour. Congratulations @ECB_cricket , well deserved.”

Neesham concluded by thanking the supporters, writing:

“Thank you to all the supporters that came out today. We could hear you the whole way. Sorry we couldn’t deliver what you so badly wanted.”
