Baroda and India all-rounder Hardik Pandya has been demoted in the latest Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) central contracts list which will be released shortly. Pandya has been out of the Indian team since the ICC T20 World Cup 2019, where he played only as a batter and bowled sparsely.

Pandya is one of the most talented all-rounders to play for India in recent times, having made his debut for India in 2016. He also has a Test century and Test fifer to his name, both coming overseas, with his century coming against in Sri Lanka and his five-wicket haul coming in England in 2018. This series in England was also the last time he played Test cricket for India.

In Asia Cup 2018, Hardik suffered a serious back injury, which rendered him out of action for quite some time. He came back in 2019 for the World Cup and also had back surgery in London the same year. However, since then, he has not been a true all-rounder, bowling very rarely, though his batting has been very good.

This has also affected Hardik Pandya, who recently was not retained by Mumbai Indians for the IPL 2022. Though he was picked by Gujarat Titans ahead of the IPL 2022 auction and was named their captain, questions are still raised about his fitness, as he is on a sabbatical in order to gain full fitness and return to bowling.

There are also rumors that he might forego his Test career to continue in limited-overs for India and it remains to be seen when he will make his comeback, though the IPL 2022 seems to be the perfect platform for him to showcase his fitness.

However, his issues have cost him quite a lot of money as the BCCI has reportedly demoted him from Category A to Category C, which will cost him approximately INR 4 crores.

The BCCI has four categories — A+ which has annual remuneration of Rs 7 crore while A, B, and C categories are valued at Rs 5 crore, Rs 3 crore, and Rs 1 crore respectively.
