ICC Women's WT20: Deandra Dottin Takes 5 For 6 As West Indies Thrash Bangladesh

Updated - 10 Nov 2018, 11:24 AM

Deandra Dottin ran through Bangladesh batting lineup as West Indies began their World T20 title defence in style by thrashing the Asian opponents by 60 runs. Dottin finished with the third-best figures ever recorded in women’s T20Is – 3.4-0-6-5 – as Bangladesh were all out for 46 chasing a mere 106.

Bangladesh threatened to play spoilsport for the hosts early on.  The joyous occasion was soon turning gloomy as Bangladesh kept on taking wicket at regular intervals after deciding to bowl first. Jahanara Alam rocked the hosts by dismissing their openers – Hayley Matthews and Dottin – off successive deliveries in the third over to reduce them to 14 for 2.  A couple of overs later, Salma Khatun struck to remove Shemaine Campbelle as West Indies found themselves reeling at 18 for 3.

Natasha McLean (11) and Britney Cooper (8) also failed to get going as Bangladesh reduced West Indies to 50 for 5 in the thirteenth over. Skipper Stefanie Taylor, on the other hand, continued to wage a lone battle. She made 29 off 44 balls, keeping her aggressive play in check as she tried to guide her team to a challenging total.  Eventually, she found help from wicketkeeper Kycia Knight, who managed 32 from 24.

West Indies eventually managed to score 106 for 8, thus opening up big possibilities of an upset.

However, the score turned out to be more than enough in the end.  Not a single player could cross the double-digit mark for the Asian champions as Bangladesh were all out for 46, the lowest-ever total in World T20I. Fargana Hoque was the top-scorer with 8 runs. The Asian outfit lost wickets at regular intervals. Consequently, they rarely looked in contention to even challenge the hosts let alone chasing down the total.

Brief scores:

West Indies 106 for 8 (Knight 32, Taylor 29, Jahanara 3-23) beat Bangladesh 46 (Dottin 5-6)
