The 2020 edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL) is set to get underway on March 29 at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai. Defending champions Mumbai Indians will take on one from the other seven teams at their home ground to kickstart the much-awaited season. This development comes just days after reporters emerged that the IPL franchises were worried over the early start to the competition.

As per previous reports, the IPL franchises were worried over BCCI’s plan of starting the tournament in March and the reason was the unavailability of some big names. With the IPL set to start in March, players from Australia, New Zealand, England and Sri Lanka will miss the start of the competition.

The three T20Is between Australia and New Zealand are scheduled to be played on March 24, 27 and 29 while the Test series between England and Sri Lanka ends on March 31. Hence, the players from these four countries will surely miss the start of the season.

According to IANS, a Delhi Capitals official said that the starting date is set to be March 29, stating: “I am told that the 2020 edition of the IPL will start on March 29 at Wankhede.”

Kolkata Knight Riders and Kings XI Punjab will be largely affected by an early start to IPL as both the franchises spent big on buying Cummins and Maxwell, respectively. Apart from them, Sunrisers Hyderabad will also miss the services of their two senior payers – captain Kane Williamson and David Warner. Rajasthan Royals will be without their captain Steve Smith, Jos Buttler, Ben Stokes and Jofra Archer for a couple of matches.

One of the reasons that has compelled the IPL governing council for the early start to the competition is to avoid as many double headers as possible. By avoiding the double headers, the IPL governing council wants to ensure that fans get the best of viewing time.
