Arguably one of the most widely recognised stadiums in the country, the MA Chidambaram stadium has been marred by legal issues for some time now. It used to host various Indian Premier League (IPL) as well as International matches earlier, but due to some problem regarding three of its stands, it had to be closed temporarily.

This deprived the city of Chennai of opportunities to host important IPL fixtures.

However, now there is some respite for cricket lovers in the city. As per the latest reports, the home ground of IPL outfit Chennai Super Kings (CSK) is due to be modified after which it will function normally.

MA Chidambaram Stadium will host IPL 2020 matches: MCC President R. Ramesh

In what would be a welcomed decision by the fans, the Chepauk stadium will host IPL 2020 matches, or so says Madras Cricket Club president, R. Ramesh.

Ramesh affirmed that the stadium will be modified, i.e, the gym in the stadium will be demolished after which the stadium should be cleared to host matches.

The legal issues regarding MA Chidambaram stadium meant that three of its stands I, J and K, had to be closed for spectators. It was speculated earlier that the nonoperational stands could be opened for a game between India and the West Indies but those plans too didn’t come to fruition.

Either way, now the MCC president has stated that the modifications (pending approval) will be carried out in February post which the Chepauk stadium will be ready to host IPL 2020 matches.

Speaking to Sportstar, Ramesh informed, “Now we will apply to the corporation and the CMDA for permission to carry out the demolition and we are sure we will be granted that since the gym is not a part of any heritage structure. Only the two old squash courts, the billiards room and the club office, the three buildings within the MCC complex, have been declared heritage structures.”

“We expect the gym will be demolished sometime in February so that the three stands can be reopened for the IPL. Chennai should not, anymore, be denied international matches and the IPL final because these three stands remained closed. The cricket fans of the State are the biggest winners. Now we can have more spectators and more big matches at Chepauk,” he added further.
