Mayank Agarwal Needs to Play for India A First Before Being Considered for Senior Selection

The Team India squad for the upcoming Nidahas Trophy was announced a couple of days ago. Many regular players have been given a break considering their heavy workload. There have been some new inclusions in the squad. However one of the star performers in the domestic circuit this season, Mayank Agarwal was overlooked.

He has been in sensational form in the ongoing season, but despite his prolific run the selectors decided to overlook him for the T20I series. The decision has raised some eyebrows after Mayank’s stupendous performance in the recent past. However, an official of Board of Control for Cricket in India revealed the reason behind Mayan’s exclusion from the squad.

“Mayank has not been selected because we are following a pattern. Any domestic performer will have to play India A before being considered for senior team selection,” a senior BCCI official who is close to the selection panel was quoted by the Press Trust of India during a recent chat with the media persons.

Mayank has been an integral part of the Karnataka team for many years now. Currently, he is in a rich vein of form and is scoring runs in all three formats of the game. He scored 1160 runs at an average of 105 with the highest score of 304* against Maharashtra. He was in decent form during the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy as well and ended up scoring 258 runs at an average of 28.

The cricketer is currently taking part in the Vijay Hazare Trophy, He has been in stupendous form and has already scored 633 runs in just seven matches at an average of 90.42. Mayank has smashed three centuries against Baroda, Odisha, and Hyderabad respectively. He has also scored three fifties in the tournament so far. Meanwhile, the opening match of the Nidahas Trophy will be played between India and Sri Lanka at the R Premadasa Stadium in Colombo.
