Michael Vaughan Takes Sly Dig At India And Sanjay Manjrekar After Ex-India Batsman Highlights England's Flawed Approach

Former England skipper Michael Vaughan took a shot at Sanjay Manjrekar after the former India batsman pointed out England’s ‘flawed thinking & approach’.

West Indies sprung quite a huge surprise by dismantling England in the first Test. England had arrived in the Caribbeans full of confidence after series wins over India and Sri Lanka. However, those wins counted for little as West Indies thrashed the visitors by 381 runs. England’s batsmen failed to get going in either of the innings as West Indies bowled out the visitors for 77 and 246 in the two innings.

What further made things worse for England was the team-selection. The decision to pick Sam Curran over Stuart Broad, who had picked up 6 wickets in the warm-up games including a hat-trick, was severely criticised. Curran had completely failed to justify the decision, scoring just 14 and 17 in both innings while taking a solitary wicket.

Later, head coach Trevor Bayliss had defended the team-selection, saying:

“It was down to Curran and Broad [for the final seamer]. Our gut feel was Curran as he has done well for us over the last six or seven games. It didn’t work out like that, the young bloke has had his first bad Test in his career. It won’t be his last but he’s a good young player who will learn from it.”

However, Sanjay Manjrekar was not at all convinced with Bayliss’ explanation. He later took to Twitter to give his opinion on England team’s mindset, writing:

“Trevor Bayliss said that Sam Curran has endured the first bad game of his career. Curran has 15 wickets in 15 innings. So it’s more his batting Bayliss is talking about…Curran bats at no 8 & 9. Highlights the flawed thinking & approach of England. #ENGvWI.”

But Manjrekar’s tweet did not go down well with Michael Vaughan and the latter was quick to return the favour. Vaughan reminded Manjrekar of England’s 4-1 win over India last year, writing:

“The same flawed thinking that beat India 4-1 Sanjay ..”
