Sri Lanka fast bowler Nuwan Kulasekara has decided to announce retirement from international cricket with immediate effect. The veteran pacer after witnessing no opportunity to come back to the national team has decided to retire.

Kulasekara announce international retirement

Kulasekara made an instant impression in his first ODI, against England at Dambulla in November 2003, after being selected from relative obscurity. From a bustling run-up and whippy open-chested action, Nuwan Kulasekara generated some good pace. With his ability to move the ball off the seam and generate reverse-swing the ball, Kulasekara became one of the significant members of the Sri Lankan team alongside Lasith Malinga. Most importantly he can maintain a tight line and length and his ability to chip in useful scores at the lower-order made him valuable for the side.

But with age, Nuwan Kulasekara lost a bit of pace and the extra zip he used to get. After the 2015 World Cup phase was a tough one for him. He was involved in a personal tragedy in the form of a car accident and his inconsistency with his bowling meant he went out of contention from the playing XI. The 27-year-old was also not part of Sri Lanka’s World Cup 2019 squad and last played for the senior national team in 2017.

Nuwan Kulasekara has represented Sri Lanka in 184 ODIs for Sri Lanka and picked up 199 wickets at an impressive economy rate of 4.90. he played 58 T20Is and finished with 66 wickets. Kulasekara was part of the victorious Sri Lanka team that clinched the T20 World Cup in 2014.
