Rohit Sharma has perhaps exceeded all the expectations with the way he has started as a Test opener. After struggling to cement his spot in the middle, he was given a chance as an opener in the ongoing Test series against South Africa and he has totally justified the faith so far with three centuries in four innings.

He started his career as an opener with twin centuries in the first Test. The right-handed batsman was out cheaply in the second Test before slamming a career-best 212 in the ongoing Ranchi Test. India were in deep trouble after deciding to bat first. The hosts were reeling at 39 for 3 before Rohit Sharma and Ajinkya Rahane joined hands.

The duo went on to share a 267-run stand to bail India out of trouble before Rahane was out for 115. Rohit Sharma was eventually out for 212 as India recovered to post 497 for 9 before declaring. The Mumbai star has now more or less proved that he is more than capable of opening the batting at home.

It will now be interesting to see how he fares once India start touring. The Virat Kohli-led side will visit New Zealand next year and Rohit would face a very challenging task. He, however, is looking forward to the challenge.

“Wherever you play the new ball, you have to have some understanding of the basics of the game. Which ball you have to play and leave. In certain aspects of the game you have to be mindful of,” said Rohit Sharma after his knock.

“I was allowing myself to take time rather than going after the ball straightway. It’s not a good idea with a new ball. You got to play with a little lower backlift. In overseas, of course, it’s a different ball game. That’s a challenge and I am awaiting,” he added.
