Carrying on from their exceptional comeback from the victory in the Wanderers Test, Team India began their ODI series campaign against South Africa with a bang by winning the opening encounter against South Africa quite comprehensively by six wickets to take a 1-0 lead in the six-match series.

It was a masterpiece by Indian skipper, Virat Kohli and wonderful innings by Ajinkya Rahane which made light work of the total set by South Africa, as India romped home with more than four overs to spare.

Earlier, it was the Indian wrist spinning duo of Kuldeep Yadav and Yuzvendra Chahal which never really allowed South Africa to go after the bowling in crucial junctures of the game. They applied the brakes brilliantly in the middle overs, and it was only when Chris Morris joined du Plessis at the crease that the hosts got some momentum by their side.

The wrist spinning duo shared five wickets between them to stall South Africa’s run flow in the middle overs and also got wickets at crucial intervals. The hosts eventually reached 269/8 in their allotted 50 overs largely due to the sensational knock by their skipper Faf du Plessis who eventually got dismissed after scoring 120 of 112 deliveries.

India began pretty well with Shikhar Dhawan and Rohit Sharma striking some wonderful shots. However, India lost both their wickets within the score of 70, and the onus was now on the skipper Virat Kohli and Ajinkya Rahane to take India home, and they did that with utmost ease.

Both stalwarts of the game paced their innings perfectly and struck the boundaries whenever the required rate went up a bit.

Kohli went on to smash his 33rd ODI century while Rahane got dismissed on 79. Both the batsmen fell with India within touching distance of the target. The duo shared a stand of 189 runs for the third wicket which never really allowed South Africa to make a comeback in the match. Eventually, it was former skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni who struck the winning shot, as India took a 1-0 lead in the Momentum ODI series.
