Scotland Cricketer Con de Lange Passes Away at 38

Scotland Cricket team all-rounder Con de Lange, diagnosed with brain tumour breathed his last on April 18 (Thursday) at the age of 38. Born in South Africa, de Lange represented Scotland in 21 matches since making his debut in 2015.

In October last year, the Con de Lange’s family went public with the news of his illness. They also launched a campaign to raise money for the Brain Tumour Charity. At the time, Malcolm Cannon, Cricket Scotland CEO, said that de Lange had been an ardent servant of Scotland cricket. He also added that they are happy to contribute to spreading the cause.

Con has been a superb servant to the game of cricket in Scotland and is a very popular member of the squad. We are now delighted to help the cause by spreading the word throughout the broader cricketing family both at home and overseas and we know there will be an overwhelming level of support from this close-knit community,” Cannon had said.

Since his debut, Con de Lange played a crucial part batting in the middle order. He also bowled gentle left-arm spin which earned him 24 wickets including his best figures of five for 60 against Zimbabwe in Edinburgh in June 2017. His five-wicket haul played an essential part in Scotland registering their first-ever win against a full-member team. Since then, de Lange featured in five matches more the last of which was in November that year against Papua New Guinea in Dubai. Meanwhile, after that, the management left him out of the playing XI due to health reasons.

Con de Lange also played domestic cricket for Cape Cobras and Knights in South Africa, and Northamptonshire in England before making his debut for Scotland. He left behind his wife and two children.
