Kane Williamson faced a tricky situation on day two of the ongoing first Test between Australia and New Zealand. In the first innings, the New Zealand captain had edged a delivery to the wicketkeeper but refused to walk. The incident took place on the final ball of the ninth over bowled by Pat Cummins. The ball was well outside off stump but Kane Williamson decided to throw his bat at it.

And the loose shot nearly cost him his wicket. The Australian players went up in unison but the umpire decided against raising his finger. Australia skipper Tim Paine then decided not to review the decision. However, replays showed that the New Zealand star, who was batting on 13 at that time, had edged the ball.

Fortunately for Australia, Williamson could not capitalise on the reprieve and could add only 31 more runs before being dismissed by Mitchell Starc after Steve Smith took a blinder in the slip. Australia went on to dismiss the Black Caps for 166 to take command of the match.

Stuart Broad surprised:

England star Stuart Broad, meanwhile, took a cheeky dig at Australia after Kane Williamson’s incident. The England pacer definitely knows a thing or two about what it is like to not walk off the field after edging a delivery against Australia. During the 2013 Ashes, Broad had famously refused to walk off the field after edging the ball during the Trent Bridge Test.

He was on 37 at the time and went on to make 65 during a crucial second-innings stand with Ian Bell. England went on to win the Test by just 14 runs. Following the game, the then Australia coach Darren Lehmann had described Broad’s refusal to walk as “blatant cheating”. Lehmann had also called on the Australian public to “get stuck into him” when England toured later that year, adding that he hoped the seamer “cries and goes home”.

And it looks like those words are still fresh in Broad’s minds as he reacted sarcastically to Williamson’s decision of now walking off, tweeting:

“Did he not walk?! Wow”

He was soon reminded by a fan of that incident as the former wrote: “Prob would have if he smashed it to first slip”. But Broad was having none of it as he responded by tweeting:
