Virat Kohli has the world at his feet. The India skipper has been ruling the world as captain and a batsman. He is widely regarded as the best batsman in the world across formats. That he has an average of more than 50 across formats is a testament of his unprecedented consistency. But amidst all these, Virat Kohli’s struggle with decision review system as a batsman has continued.

On Saturday, he failed once again as South Africa pacer Anrich Nortje dismissed him cheaply in the ongoing third Test in Ranchi. The India skipper, who had scored an unbeaten double century in the previous game, was out for just 12. Nortje set up the dismissal perfectly. He bowled two outgoing deliveries before bringing one to surprise Kohli.

The right-handed batsman was not ready for the delivery and missed it completely. Virat Kohli played all around it with feet chained to the crease. The ball missed the inside edge and went on to hit him on the pad around the knee roll. And while it looked very close, Virat Kohli decided to test his fate by reviewing the decision.

But the decision stayed as umpire’s call as replays confirmed the ball would’ve hit the outside of leg.  And the review was Kohli’s ninth unsuccessful on the trot as batsman in Tests. It’s been nearly two years since he got one right.

India, meanwhile, are in a precarious position in the game. The hosts were reeling at 71 for 3 at lunch with Rohit Sharma and Ajinkya Rahane in the middle. Kagiso Rabada came out all guns blazing with the ball to dismiss Mayank Agarwal and Cheteshwar Pujara before Nortje accounted for Kohli.
