Temba Bavuma will wait till after the dust has settled from a dismal World Cup campaign to assess his choices in order to avoid being pressured into making a “emotional” decision on his future as T20I captain.

Change may be in the air as South Africa is planning to split the red and white-ball coaching responsibilities going forward. This is the second tournament under his direction in which South Africa failed to advance to the knockout rounds, and the last under coach Mark Boucher, who resigned to join Mumbai Indians.

“It’s been a challenging time, Thinking about it now, a lot of it will be emotional in terms of my job as team captain. It’s something I’ll consider. I’ll contact the appropriate parties. We’ll have to wait and see who comes in as a coach.”

“When you have adjustments like that, they may arrive in a new style. They may seek a different leader to carry out their vision or style of play. If I think about all of it, I’ll get emotional” an emotional Bavuma said after the shocking defeat to the Netherlands.

Temba Bavuma is expected to reevaluate his role as South Africa’s captain:

Following his team’s appalling performance in their T20 World Cup encounter against the Netherlands in Adelaide on Sunday, Temba Bavuma is expected to reevaluate his role as South Africa’s captain. South Africa, one of the favorites to win the tournament, was eliminated from contention for a spot in the semi-finals by the Dutch, who entered the match as clear underdogs and won by 13 runs.

Bavuma’s leadership has long been praised as exemplary, but his prowess as a T20 player has received less praise. He took over as captain during a captaincy vacuum and then kept the team together after Quinton de Kock missed a crucial game at last year’s tournament due to a board directive to take a knee.

With 635 T20I runs under his belt, Temba Bavuma has a strike rate of 116.08 and an average of 22.67. He had 11 runs scored in four white-ball innings prior to this event, including two ducks, after a three-month absence due to an elbow injury.
