Jasprit Bumrah punished for inappropriate physical contact with Ollie Pope

Jasprit Bumrah with the offence breached Article 2.12 of the ICC Code of Conduct for Players and Player Support Personnel, which is related to “inappropriate physical contact with a Player, Player Support Personnel, Umpire, Match Referee or any other person (including a spectator during an International Match.” 

Apart from this, Jasprit Bumrah has also received one demerit point in his disciplinary record. This was the fast bowler’s first offence in the last one year and therefore only a demerit point has been added to his tally. 

As per the ICC’s law, Level 1 breaches by players carry “a minimum penalty of an official reprimand, a maximum penalty of 50 per cent of a player’s match fee, and one or two demerit points.” 

The on-field umpires during the first Test between India and England Paul Reiffel and Chris Gaffaney along with third umpire Marais Erasmus and fourth umpire Rohan Pandit levelled the charges against the pace sparehead of India bowling lineup in Jasprit Bumrah. 

The fast bowler accepted the sanctions against him and pleaded guilty to the offence. Therefore there was no need for a formal hearing related to the sanctions put on him by the ICC Elite Panel of Match Referee Richie Richardson. 

Jasprit Bumrah shines with the ball in the first Test against England 

India pacer Jasprit Bumrah oozed his class in the recently concluded first Test against England. Despite the wicket favouring spinners, the fast bowler made sure that he set the stage on fire and helped his team get into a solid position in the game. 

In the first innings, Jasprit Bumrah picked up two wickets and then followed it with a four-wicket haul in the second innings. However, his efforts went in vain as India suffered a disappointing 28-run loss in the Hyderabad and started the series on a losing note. 

India dominated the first two days of the game and took a first-innings lead of 190 runs after bundling out England for 246 runs. However, after that, Ollie Pope played a brilliant innings of 196 runs and helped England set a big target of 231 runs on the board. 

With the bat, India displayed a torrid outing and gave away wickets to Tom Hartley, who picked seven wickets. The debutant picked 7 wickets as England bundled out India for just 202 runs. The hosts would be eager to make a comeback in the second game and level the series. The match will take place from 2nd February in Vizag.
