India had the third-highest run chase in ODIs in the West Indies on Sunday. At Queen’s Park Oval in Port of Spain, Trinidad, Shikhar Dhawan and the team defeated a target of 312 and won the second game of the three-match ODI series by two wickets.

Back in February 2019 at the Bridgetown in Barbados, England defeated the West Indies by chasing down 362. It continues to be the Caribbean’s most successful ODI run-chase. On the same field in June 2003, Sri Lanka’s run chase against the West Indies was the second-highest.

Team India Breaks 34-Year-Old Record

Back in 1988 against Pakistan at Port of Spain’s Queen’s Park Oval, West Indies recorded the most successful run-chase there when they chased down 272 on the strength of half-centuries from their captain at the time, Gordon Greenidge, and Richie Richardson. Thus, Shikhar Dhawan’s India set a new record after 34 years.

Axar Patel‘s decisive 64* off 35 balls, which included three fours and five sixes, helped India win the game on Sunday with two balls remaining. Kyle Mayers was sent to the ground by the southpaw for a huge six, bringing the Men in Blue to victory.

Mayers began the last over with a dot, followed by two singles, before making a line and length error. Mayers, who took the key wickets of Suryakumar Yadav and Shubman Gill, then erred in the next two overs.

Axar was also quite skilled with the ball. The left-arm spinner took the crucial wicket of Shamarh Brooks in nine overs while only allowing 40 runs to be scored at an economy rate of 4.44. A maiden was also produced by the spinner.
