Dinesh Karthik received praise from Aakash Chopra for his game-changing performance in the first Twenty20 International between India and the West Indies on Friday (July 29).

At the Brian Lara Stadium in Tarouba, the Men in Blue set a formidable 191-run goal for the hosts, and Karthik hammered an unbeaten 41 off only 19 deliveries. Then, their bowlers held the hosts to 122-8, enabling them to win easily by 68 runs and grab an early 1-0 lead in the five-match series.

Karthik was chosen by Aakash ChopraAakash Chopra as his Player of the Match when reviewing the match in a video posted on his YouTube channel, with the following explanation:

“Dinesh Karthik is my pick for the game’s MVP, and Rohit Sharma was the player with the highest runs scored, but he also received the honor. Stats only reveal a small portion of the truth in this situation. There is no denying that Rohit was brilliant, but when he left, it appeared as though India would become trapped.”

“How will they become trapped? Everything is possible when Dinesh is present. This particular player still has some cricket left in him. What a player and finisher. One more time, Dinesh Karthik came and shone.”

Karthik’s position as a specialist finisher was highlighted, but Aakash Chopra also noted that the 37-year-old batted significantly lower than usual on Friday. The well-known commentator noted:

“He could be the only batter in the entire world to specialize in playing at No. 6. He had a strike rate of 215 and scored 41 runs off 19 balls while hitting four fours and two sixes. This time, he came after Jadeja at number 7, not even at number 6.”
