Indian batter Shubman Gill joined an elite list of openers from the country to remain not out on the nineties during the third and final ODI match against West Indies on Wednesday.

Gill was unbeaten on 98, playing a run-a-ball innings as India was left stranded at 225/3 after rain showers interrupted the play at Queen’s Park Oval in Trinidad.

Shubman Gill missed well deserved hundred

It was the second time in the day when the rain halted the play, however, the play returned at the expense of the rest of the Indian innings discarded.

That meant Shubman Gill will have to wait for another moment to achieve his maiden ODI century with the Indian opener falling two runs short of the landmark.

Gill hit seven fours and two sixes in the course of his highest individual score in ODI cricket. He joined the likes of Sachin Tendulkar, Sunil Gavaskar, Virender Sehwag, Shikhar Dhawan and Kris Srikkanth to remain not out in the nineties.

Was not under my control: Shubman Gill

Was hoping to get a hundred, but that (rain) was not under my control. Was very disappointed with how I got out in the first two ODIs. I tried to play according to the ball and let my instincts take over. I wanted only one more over, was hoping for that. The wicket played fantastically in all three games. The ball was gripping a bit after 30 overs. Happy with my performance,” Gill, who was awarded player of the match, said in the post-match presentation ceremony.

Gill finished the series with the most runs between the two teams – 205 runs at an average of 102.50. India bowled out the hosts for 137 in 26 overs.
