Chennai Super Kings will take on Kolkata Knight Riders in the final of IPL 2021 at Dubai International Cricket Stadium on Friday. Both teams finished at the bottom half of the points table last season. However, contrary to everyone’s expectations, they exhibited sensational performances and reached the final.

Interestingly, this will be the second time in the history of IPL when CSK and KKR will take on each other in an IPL final. The two teams previously played against each other in IPL 2012 final. SRH finished the IPL 2021 season at the bottom of the table, having managed only 3 wins in 14 matches. Sunrisers Hyderabad are known for their consistency. They made their first appearance in the 2013 edition of the tournament.

In the first very season, they managed to reach the playoffs. Sunrisers Hyderabad won the first title in the 2016 edition after beating RCB in the final. Under the new leader in Kane Williamson in the 2018 edition of IPL, Sunrisers Hyderabad reached the finals for the second time in their IPL history. However, they couldn’t win the title as they lost to CSK in the summit clash.

Royal Challengers Bangalore have been performing well for the last couple of seasons. RCB is one of the most popular franchises in IPL as they have had the biggest stars in T20 cricket, right from the inaugural season in 2008. In spite of that, Royal Challengers Bangalore never won an IPL title.

They have come close to winning a total on a few occasions but couldn’t win the title. For the unversed, RCB have managed to reach the final on three occasions in IPL. The franchise reached the final for the first time in IPL 2009 under the leadership of Anil Kumble.

Deccan Chargers beat them in the summit clash by 6 runs. In 2011, they lost the final at the hands of Chennai Super Kings. RCB reached the final for the third time in the 2016 edition of IPL. Unfortunately, they couldn’t go on to win the title as Sunrisers Hyderabad beat them in the final by 8 runs.

3. Kolkata Knight Riders: 3 Times 

Kolkata Knight Riders will be playing IPL 2021 final against CSK on Friday at Dubai International Cricket Stadium. KKR is one of the most successful franchises in IPL. They have won two titles in their IPL history and would be aiming to win the third one on Friday.

Kolkata Knight Riders appeared in two finals in 13 editions and won both of them. Under the leadership of Gautam Gambhir, the Knight Riders reached the final of the India Premier League for the first time in 2012. They beat CSK in the final by 5 wickets to win the title. They replicated a similar feat in 2014 after beating Kings XI Punjab by 3 wickets in the summit clash.

The most successful team in the history of IPL, Mumbai Indians sits second in the list, having managed to reach the finals on 6 occasions. Mumbai Indians reached the final for the first time in the 2010 edition, however, they lost the game against CSK by 22 runs.

They took revenge in the 2013 edition after beating Chennai Super Kings in the final. They met CSK once again in 2015 final and beat them again. Mumbai Indians played the final in 2017 and 2019 and won on both occasions. Overall, Mumbai Indians have managed to reach the finals on six occasions and won it 5 times.

1. Chennai Super Kings: 9Times 

Chennai Super Kings sits at the top of the table, having managed to reach the final on 9 occasions. Chennai Super Kings is, unarguably, the most consistent team in the history of the IPL. The fact that they have reached the final 9 times out of 13 tells a lot about the franchise.

The inaugural edition of the tournament saw Chennai Super Kings reach the final of the tournament. They, however, lost the game to RR in the summit clash. CSK couldn’t reach the final the next year but went on to win the next two editions.

MS Dhoni reached the third consecutive final in 2012 but lost to KKR in the summit clash. 2013 and 2014 editions saw CSK reaching the final yet again but lost to MI and KKR respectively.

CSK lost the final against Mumbai Indians in 2015. After being suspended for two years, CSK made a comeback in the 2018 edition and went on to win the title after beating SRH in the final.
