Tristan Stubbs' whirlwind knock of went in vain as Mumbai Indians, on Sunday (April 7), defeated Delhi Capitals by 29 runs to open their account in the ongoing Indian Premier League 2024. DC finished their innings on  205/8 after MI set them a huge target of 235 runs.

DC needed a quick start but David Warner and Prithvi Shaw failed to start strongly. They added 22 runs for the first wicket before Romario Shepherd dismissed Warner for 10 runs in the fourth over. DC were on 46 for 1 at the end of the powerplay.

Shaw and Abishek Porel kept their team in the hunt by sharing an 88-run stand for the second wicket. Jasprit Bumrah broke the stand by castling Shaw with a beauty in the 12th over. The opener departed after scoring 66 runs off 40 balls.  In the 15th over, Bumrah struck again to remove Porel as well for 41.

However, Tristan Stubbs kept his team in the hunt by smashing a 19-ball fifty. However, he got very little support from the other end and DC eventually fell short by 29 runs. In the last over when DC needed 34 runs to win, Stubbs did not even get the strike. He remained unbeaten on 71 off just 25 balls.

MI vs DC: MI innings

Earlier in the day, DC captain Rishabh Pant opted to bowl first and it did not take him long to regret his decision. Rohit Sharma and Ishan Kishan gave MI a flying start, adding 75 runs in the powerplay.

DC finally had the first breakthrough in the seventh over when Axar Patel castled Rohit for 49. In the very next over, Anrich Nortje dismissed Suryakumar Yadav for a duck to reduce DC to 81 for 2. The breakthroughs helped DC stem the flow of runs before Kishan broke the shackles by hitting a couple of sixes. However, before he could inflict further damage on DC, Axar struck again and sent him packing for 42 in the 11th over.

In the 13th over, Khaleel Ahmed dismissed Tilak Varma for just 6 to leave MI reeling at 121 for 4. By the time the 15th over came to an end, MI were on 138 for 4. From that stage, it looked like MI would finish around 190. However, the five-time IPL champions scored a staggering 96 runs in the last five overs to finish on 234/5.

After Hardik Pandya was dismissed by Nortje for 39 in the 18th over, Romario Shepherd and Tim David joined hands to take their team to the 230-plus total. Shepherd did the bulk of the damage, scoring 39 runs from just 10 balls including 32 runs in the final over bowled by Nortje. David, on the other hand, remained unbeaten on 45 off 21 balls.
