New home for Punjab Kings! PBKS to play IPL 2024 home matches at newly-built Mullanpur stadium

After the announcement of the first 17-day schedule of the Indian Premier League 2024, Punjab Kings have announced that they will play all their home games at the newly-developed Maharaja Yadavindra Singh Stadium in Mullanpur, Mohali. Before this, PBKS used to play their IPL home games at the IS Bindra PCA Stadium in Mohali. The stadium, which has hosted domestic matches in recent years, has a capacity of 33,000 people.

Mullanpur Stadium features a well-equipped herringbone drainage system that removes water within 25-30 minutes of the rain stopping. Instead of regular soil, the ground is built of sand, which is difficult to manage but provides adequate stability. It will get an official inauguration when Punjab Kings take on Delhi Capitals on March 23.

Punjab Kings to play home games at the Mullanpur Stadium

Punjab Kings issued an official press release and informed about the development. The press release reads, “The stadium, which has hosted domestic matches for the last couple of years, comprises all the modern facilities and top class infrastructure, and can host a capacity of 33,000 fans. The Mullanpur stadium also has a well-equipped herringbone drainage system, which helps in removal of water within 25-30 minutes after the rain stops.”

“Instead of using traditional soil, the ground is made of sand, which is difficult to maintain, but provides good stability. It is equipped with two international-standard dressing rooms having facilities for steam, sauna and ice bath, while a world-class gym has also been set up at this complex.”

Punjab Kings would be hoping to win their maiden Indian Premier League title when they begin their campaign against the Delhi Capitals. PBKS is one of those teams, who have performed well in the initial stages of the tournament but later their performance deteriorates and they are also not able to make it to the playoffs. PBKS’ previous best performance came in the IPL 2014 when they reached the final but ended up losing to Kolkata Knight Riders.

The Indian Premier League 2024 is all set to start on March 22 at the M.A. Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai. Reigning champions Chennai Super Kings and Royal Challengers Bangalore will play the tournament opener, which is one of the ‘El Clasico’s’ of the cash-rich league.

The BCCI has only released the schedule of the first 17 days of the tournament and the later dates will be released once the Election Commission of India releases the dates of the general elections. The IPL 2024 was expected to be held out of India due to the general elections, however, the organisers have been coordinating with the central government and are preparing the schedule of the tournament.

IPL 2024 will once again be played between 10 teams which include Chennai Super Kings, Delhi Capitals, Gujarat Titans, Kolkata Knight Riders, Lucknow Super Giants, Mumbai Indians, Punjab Kings, Royal Challengers Bangalore, Rajasthan Royals, and Sunrisers Hyderabad. The Chennai Super Kings are the current champions.

Last year, the Chennai-based franchise tied the record by winning the IPL for the fifth time, defeating Gujarat Titans in the finals. Chennai and Mumbai Indians seek to make history this season by becoming the first team to win the IPL six times.
