The Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) announced a 15-member squad for the upcoming three-match ODI series against Ireland. The uncapped pacer Mrittunjoy Chowdhury received a maiden call-up to the national cricket team and replaced the injured Taskin Ahmed in the squad for the series, with the first match scheduled to be played in Chelmsford on May 9.
Ireland will host Bangladesh for ODIs, which are part of the ICC World Cup Super League. Ireland has the chance to qualify directly for the upcoming ICC ODI World Cup 2023 in India if they beat Bangladesh by a margin of 3-0. Otherwise, the hosts will have to play World Cup qualifiers, which are scheduled to be played in Zimbabwe in June and July.
Taskin Ahmed was ruled out of the Ireland Test due to a strain on his left side and failed to regain match fitness before the tour. Bangladesh Cricket Board chief selector believes that Taskin’s injury is a big loss for the team and that Mrittunjoy can be effective in English conditions as he can swing the ball.
“It is a big loss that we could not get Taskin as he is ruled due to injury but at the same time it is an opportunity for others. We have picked Mrittunjoy as he could swing the ball and can be effective in English condition,” Minhajul Abedin, Bangladesh Cricket Board chief selector, told Cricbuzz on Sunday.

The pacer Shoriful Islam and left-arm spinner Taijul Islam are back in the squad, while Nasum Ahmed failed to retain his place despite a good performance against Ireland. The selectors are looking at a few options ahead of the World Cup, as they picked Taijul ahead of Nasum.
“We are looking at everyone and for the tour we want to see Taijul but that does not imply everything is over for Nasum. Ahead of the World Cup we are trying to look at a few options and this is one such move (picking Taijul ahead of Nasum),” he added.
Head coach Chandika Hathurusingha and support staff left Dhaka and will arrive on April 23 to prepare for their upcoming tour of Ireland. Litton Das and Mustafizur Rahman were expected to return from the Indian Premier League before the tour began. The remaining two matches will be played on May 12 and 14, respectively.
