India were finally able to register their first win at the Sahara Park Newlands after 30 years and defeated the Proteas in the second Test by 7 wickets. The Indian team was handed over a target of 79 runs by the hosts which was never going to prove enough for them to win the match. After winning the match, the Indian team also leveled the Test series 1-1 and finished the South African tour with a win.

Batting first on the Newlands pitch will be probably one of the worst decisions for Dean Elgar in his captaincy career. The Proteas faced a Mohammed Siraj storm in the first innings when they were reduced to 15/4 at one stage. Siraj got three of the first four wickets dismissing big names such as Dean Elgar (4), Aiden Markram (2), and Tony de Zorzi (2). Jasprit Bumrah got rid of Tristan Stubbs for 3 runs.

After removing the top three of the South African team, Mohammed Siraj struck once again and this time dismissed David Bedingham for 12 runs. Marco Jansen became the fifth victim of Mohammed Siraj and was dismissed for a duck by a beautiful inswinger which went away from the batsman. Siraj’s sixth prey was Kyle Verreynne and he had to walk back for 15 runs.

After the Mohammed Siraj storm, Keshav Maharaj (3), Kagiso Rabada (5) and Nandre Burger (4) were the last three South African wickets to fall. The eighth and the ninth wicket went to Mukesh Kumar whereas Jasprit Bumrah ended things off for Team India in the first innings.

Mohammed Siraj ended the innings with figures of 6/19 whereas Jasprit Bumrah (2/25) and Mukesh Kumar (2/0) picked up two wickets a piece.

The Indian team started off with a bang when skipper Rohit Sharma hit Lungi Ngidi for 13 runs in the first over. However, Yashasvi Jaiswal was not able to do much and got for a duck to Kagiso Rabada. Rohit started to take the innings forward with Shubman Gill who played some solid shots.

However, Rohit Sharma had to give his wicket away to Nandre Burger for 39 runs whereas Gill also got out for 36 to Burger. Shreyas Iyer also didn’t stay long at the crease and didn’t trouble the scorers and was the fourth Indian wicket to fall in their first innings. Burger removed Iyer as Marco Jansen took a brilliant catch at gully.

While wickets kept on falling from one end, Indian batsman Virat Kohli was tough at the other end. India didn’t lose any wickets at Tea on Day 1. However, while continuing from 111/4, India lost KL Rahul as their fifth wicket for 8 runs whereas Ravindra Jadeja didn’t have a good return to the Test side and was out for a duck to Lungi Ngidi.

Virat Kohli finally lost his concentration and got out to Kagiso Rabada just four runs short of his half-century for 46 runs. With Virat getting out, South Africa didn’t waste much time in removing the Indian tale, and at last India lost their last six wickets for 0 runs. India were bundled for 153 runs and gained a 98-run lead in the first innings. Lungi Ngidi, Kagiso Rabada, and Nandre Burger finished the innings with three wickets a piece.

Coming out to bat in their second innings, South Africa started off well and added 37 runs for the first wicket. However, India drew the first blood in the form of Dean Elgar for 12 runs and Mukesh Kumar struck. Tony de Zorzi didn’t last long at the crease and was the next victim of Mukesh for 1 run. As the day was about to end, the Indian team struck again and Tristan Stubbs was removed by Jasprit Bumrah for 1 run.

South Africa ended Day 1 at 62/3 in their second innings and were 36 runs behind India’s first-innings lead. While continuing to bat on Day 2, Jasprit Bumrah removed David Bedingham for 11 runs as the Proteas were only able to add 4 runs to their overnight score.

South Africa face Jasprit Bumrah storm on Day 2

While it was Mohammed Siraj in the first innings, Jasprit Bumrah turned out to be a storm for South Africa in the second innings and he removed Kyle Verreynne (9), Marco Jansen (11), and Keshav Maharaj (3) to complete his fifer.

While South Africa lost Keshav Maharaj as their seventh wicket for 111 runs, Aiden Markram shifted gears and started to take on the Indian bowlers. Markram completed his ton in 99 balls, which was one of the best Test innings of his career. However, his attack was stopped by Mohammed Siraj as Markram had to walk back for 106 runs.

Prasidh Krishna removed Kagiso Rabada for 2 whereas Jasprit Bumrah finished off the innings by getting rid of Lungi Ngidi. Bumrah ended the innings with a six-wicket haul whereas, Mukesh Kumar picked up two wickets. Krishna and Mohammed Siraj picked up 1 wicket each.

India achieve first Test win in Cape Town

Chasing down 79 runs, Yashasvi Jaiswal made intentions clear from the first ball and hit 28 runs from 23 balls. Jaiswal hit six fours in his short cameo, however, he became the victim of Nandre Burger. Shubman Gill also didn’t stay long and fell to Kagiso Rabada for 10 runs. The Indian team was inching close to the target, but Virat Kohli was dismissed for 12 runs by Marco Jansen.

However, at last, Shreyas Iyer (4*) and Rohit Sharma (17*) made sure that the Indian team won the match by 7 wickets and also their first victory at the Sahara Park Newlands.
