Former Mumbai Indians (MI) captain Rohit Sharma looked visibly emotional after failing yet again in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024. He was unable to play a good knock for his team against Pat Cummins-led Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) in the 55th match of the competition at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai on Monday, May 6.

Rohit Sharma entered the Indian Premier League 2024 with the captaincy burden off his shoulders as Mumbai Indians (MI) decided to replace him as skipper with all-rounder Hardik Pandya, who was traded in from Gujarat Titans (GT).

Although the burden of leadership was off Rohit Sharma's shoulders, he had a huge burden of expectation to deliver his best-ever performance as a batter in the Indian Premier League. Notably, Rohit has been a highly successful skipper for MI as he won 5 IPL championships but his performance with the bat has been below-par in the cash-rich league for a while.

Rohit Sharma got off to a perfect start in the competition as he played back-to-back brilliant innings and looked in great touch, with him even smashing a century against Chennai Super Kings - although in a losing cause.

In the first 7 matches for Mumbai Indians (MI), Rohit Sharma scored 297 runs at an average of 49.5 and a strike rate of 164.1. However, his form took a u-turn and he failed miserably in the next 5 matches, scoring just 33 runs at an average of 6.6 and a strike rate of 94.3.

In the match against Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH), Rohit Sharma scored just 4 runs off 5 balls, before being dismissed by Pat Cummins. On the 2nd ball of the 4th over, Cummins bowled a length delivery on middle and Rohit looked to pick it up and flick it away behind square. He did connect with the ball very well and it went straight up in the air off the leading edge. Heinrich Klaasen made no mistake and completed the simple catch to dismiss Rohit Sharma.

Notably, this was the 4th time Pat Cummins dismissed Rohit Sharma in T20s. Overall, in 9 innings, he has scored 57 runs in 41 balls against Cummins at an average of 14.25.

Ahead of the MI vs SRH clash, former India opener Aakash Chopra expressed his concern over the form of Rohit Sharma and hoped for a good showing against the Hyderabad-based franchise.

"I am first focusing on Rohit Sharma because in the last four games - Rajasthan, Delhi, Lucknow and the last game here vs KKR - I think his highest score is probably 11. This does not go well. He had a good start to the tournament, 300-325 runs were scored, struck a century as well at this ground but after that, he has just fallen off the radar. You don't want that," he said.

"He has got out many times against left-arm seamers and here also you will get one in T Natarajan and possibly Jaydev Unadkat as well. So I am a little worried from an Indian point of view, not the Mumbai Indians' point of view as much. I want the Indian team's T20 captain to score runs," the former India opener added.
