England batter Philip Salt revealed the influence of teammate Jason Roy on his way to England men’s senior team in white-ball cricket. When England face the Netherlands in the second ODI on Sunday (June 19), Roy will make his 100th appearance for the Eoin Morgan-led side in One-Day Internationals since making his debut in 2015.

Roy has been one of the destructive openers in modern-day cricket and formed a lethal pair along with Jonny Bairstow at the top for England. The fearless approach of the du0 was one of the key factors in their 2019 World Cup triumph.

I love chatting the game through with Jason Roy: Philip Salt

Salt, who scored his maiden century (122) in the first ODI against the Netherlands, mentioned how Roy helped him in building his game. Salt was 17 when Roy made his England debut eight years ago in the T20I format.
“J-Roy has definitely been an influence. I’m lucky to have people like that around who are willing to give up their time and have those chats and want to see you do well. I love chatting the game through with J-Roy because he’s so clear and so destructive in what he does,” Salt was quoted as saying by ESPNCricinfo.

Every time you put on an England shirt is an honour: Philip Salt

Salt was one of those youngsters who got their maiden call-up for England in the three-match ODI series at home in July last year. Salt was part of the Ben Stokes-led ODI side as the core team was isolated after seven members from their camp tested positive for COVID-19 ahead of the Pakistan series.
The Sussex player amassed 104 runs in the three ODIs at 34.67 against Pakistan including 60 in the second ODI.

“I’ve only had three ODIs before this, against Pakistan, and there were some players who played well in that series who missed out. So to be on this trip, I’m very grateful for that. Hopefully, I can keep performing and proving them [the interim selectors] right,” Salt said.
“Every time you put on an England shirt is an honour so I want to keep doing that. It’s as simple as knowing that when I get the opportunity, I’ve got to perform and I’ve got to do well: that’s how it’s going to work if you want to have a long England career. If I can keep doing stuff like that and keep putting my name in the hat, hopefully, I will give the selectors a headache,” he added.
England created a record total of 498 against the Netherlands in the first ODI as Salt, Dawid Malan (125) and Jos Buttler (162*) scored brisk tons. It was the third instance for a team to include three centurions in an ODI innings after South Africa achieved the feat on a couple of occasions.
