Rishabh Pant playing as the opener in T20Is will be a huge advantage for the Men in Blue, according to R Sridhar, a former fielding coach for Team India. He suggested that the team give the wicketkeeper-batter some time to adjust to his new position.
As the other team’s attention will be on devising preparations for Rishabh Pant, Sridhar suggested that it would also make things simpler for captain Rohit Sharma.
According to the 52-year-old, asking Pant to bat first is comparable to elevating Sachin Tendulkar to the top of the order in a white-ball cricket match.
Opening The Innings Will Free Rishabh Pant Up: R Sridhar
He believes that this action may go down in Indian cricket history as one of the most important ones.
On the YouTube channel for cricket.com/tv, he stated:
“It’s a wonderful move because, first of all, it will free him up. It will give us a left-right combination too, which is so vital going into big tournaments. If Rishabh comes and opens, it will also free up Rohit Sharma because there is lot of attention on Rishabh.
The bowling meetings will be spent talking about how to bowl to Rishabh in the powerplay, so that could give Rohit some space to do what he does. It is a positive move and it reminds me of someone who put Sachin Tendulkar at the top back in 1994.
“It could be a watershed moment in India’s white-ball cricket. He may not fire straight away, but we need to persist with him.”
Rishabh Pant is anticipated to play as an opener alongside Rohit Sharma in the forthcoming five-match T20I series against West Indies, as he did during India’s tour of England. KL Rahul has been ruled out due to injury.
In his two T20I games against England as the opener earlier this month, the left-hander recorded scores of 26 and 1.
