SA20 Permit Wildcard Selections Outside Of The Salary Cap

A provision for wild card recruiting is being introduced by SA20, and it will be in addition to the player purse. The six IPL franchise-owned clubs have been informed that they are free to sign players who are not subject to the salary ceiling and that the regulator, in this case, Cricket South Africa (CSA), will not be involved. 

Although the regulations for such picks have not yet been finalized, a CSA representative verified the development and stated that such a provision has in fact been created. The representative stated that “the regulations are currently being written.” This clause was officially disclosed to the franchises during a workshop around the end of last month. 

Wildcards Not Subject To Any Role Of The SA20 Nor The Salary Cap

“We can take any player we want and it will not be subject to any role of the SA20 nor the salary cap,” a franchise official revealed to this website. “We can pick a player seeing the availability.”  

The player purse has been set at $ 2 million, and the franchises purchased players at the Cape Town auction on September 19 based on those amounts. Though it is thought that each franchise will select whether to use a wild card player or not, if they do, it will be in addition to the 17 players that were previously required for each team. 

Once the rules for the concept are established, it will be clear how the wild card idea would operate, although it is possible that it could have a destabilizing effect on the SA20 league’s revenue model. The NOC from the signed player boards will be required by the CSA. 

Since the proposal was made public, there has been discussion about how it would provide Pakistani players who missed the auction a chance. It is thought that the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has agreed in principle to give NOCs if its players are offered SA20 contracts. The scheduled start date for the competition is January 10, 2023. 

Broadcast Agreement Between CSA And Viacom-18 Officially Completed

Meanwhile, the seven-year broadcast agreement between the CSA and Viacom 18 has been officially inked, as was previously speculated by this website. Over $250 million is thought to have been spent over the course of seven years. The agreement calls for all bilateral matches to take place in South Africa during the years 2024 to 2031. 

“As part of the association, Viacom18 will present all senior Men’s international and senior Women’s international competitions played in South Africa,” the company said in a statement.
