Sunil Gavaskar Rates India's Border-Gavaskar Trophy Victory Along With 1971 Heroics

Sunil Gavaskar has rated the historic victory today at the Gabba in the Border Gavaskar Trophy along with India’s famous wins in 1971 against West Indies and England.

The Legendary batsman had pointed out that the series win in Australia today will go down as one of the greatest tests wins for India. The reason being the ability to handle some serious pressure after getting bundled out for 36 in the first test.

Team India Register A Remarkable Victory At The Gabba

India went into the day five with a daunting task of 328 to get, but they needed to play out the day which would have allowed them to retain the trophy. But India had different plans and after they had slowly built a partnership, they accelerated by increasing the scoring rate and Rishabh Pant’s heroics, in the end, was enough for India to seal a remarkable victory at the Gabba. Shubman Gill and Pujara also played beautifully scoring 91 and 56 respectively.

India had lost most of their key players at the start of the series which meant each and every player in the Indian team had to contribute for the team’s victory. A team effort always brings a lot of value and a leader like Ajinkya Rahane who always backs the players in the team have combinedly made huge leaps to regain the trophy.

“It Will Probably Fit In With The First Wins In 1971” – Sunil Gavaskar

Sunil Gavaskar pointed out that the series victory today was as special as the wins in 1971 against England and West Indies. India went on to beat the mighty West Indies 1-0 in a five-match series in 1971 and later that year they went on to beat England in the same year later.

“It will probably fit in with the first wins in 1971. I am not saying this because I was part of the team. I am saying this because that was the first time India beat the West Indies in a Test match and then went on to win the series. While India had beaten England in India, they beat England in England… the England team that had just come from Australia and won the Ashes.” Sunil Gavaskar told Sony Six on Tuesday.

“They were on a high. Those two wins were way above any other win after that. Now, this win will be one which will rank with those wins as probably one of the famous cricketing wins,” Gavaskar added.

Sunil Gavaskar had told that he doesn’t want to take lightly the efforts of the 1971 series but he has rated the series win today as one of greatest test victories.
