The much debated topic surrounding the safety of an umpire on a cricket is bound to resurface after a Bangladeshi teenager received a fatal injury while umpiring a cricket match. The Police, on Saturday (October 7), stated that 17-year old Rafiqul Islam was hit by the ball on the field before being rushed to Dhaka Medical College Hospital where he was declared dead. The incident took place  at Dhaka’s Balur Math ground.

“A group of youths were playing cricket in the field and the boy was the umpire. He collapsed on the field after a ball hit him in the chest,” local police chief Enamul Haque was quoted as saying by AFP.

“He is from a very poor family. His father is a rickshaw-puller and mother works as a housemaid. They buried him last night,” he added.

The latest incident has brought back the horrific memories of 2014 when Australia’s Phillip Hughes succumbed after being hit on the back of his head during a Sheffield Shield game in Sydney. Since that incident, the authorities have ensured that the players wear the redesigned helmets to protect the back side of the head.
