The legendary batsman from West Indies, Brian Lara is one of the greatest batters of our generation. A large section of the crowd across the globe used to sit tight in front of the television to watch the dynamite bat and tear any bowling unit with his sheer brilliance. He carried the legacy of West Indies cricket on his shoulders for many years across the formats.

No-one since Sir Don Bradman has built massive scores as often and as fast as Lara in his premier days. Even his stance was thrilling – the bat raised high in the air, the weight poised on a bent front knee, the eyes low and level. Then the guillotine would fall, sending the ball flashing to the boundary. In the space of two months in 1994, Lara’s 375 and 501 not out broke world records for the highest Test and first-class scores.

Brian Lara reveals who can break his record

Brian Lara finally broke his record of the highest score in Tests when he played an unbeaten 400-run innings against England in Antiga in 2004. Since then, it has been more than 15 years, but the record has remained intact. Most recently, David Warner came close to breaking the record during Australia’s Test series against Pakistan, but skipper Tim Paine declared the innings when the southpaw was batting at 335.

Since then, it has been a talking point that who, among the current generation players can break the record. Brian Lara has finally responded to the debates putting forward his candidates to break the record and set a new landmark.

“It would be difficult for Steve Smith to do it batting at No.4 for Australia. He is a great player, but he doesn’t dominate. You know a player like David Warner for sure. A player like Virat Kohli, who gets in early and gets set. He is a very attacking player. Rohit Sharma on his day. So they have got quite a group of players who can do so,” Lara said to India Today.
