That Mahendra Singh Dhoni is almost indispensable in the current Indian team once again became crystal clear, as the former India skipper played a sublime knock of 65 to help India recover from a disastrous start and post 112 in the ongoing first ODI against Sri Lanka in Dharamshala.

The World Cup-winning skipper, who had faced widespread criticism for his performance in the T20I series against New Zealand, walked into bat when India was reeling at 16 for five. On a lively Dharamshala track, none of India’s top-order batsmen could deliver with the bat before Dhoni walked in.

His task, meanwhile, became more tougher when India got reduced to 29 for seven. However, the 36-year old proved his class by sharing important stands with tail-enders to save India from embarrassment.

He first shared a 41-run stand with Kuldeep Yadav before Akila Dananjaya dismissed the latter. It was followed by a 17-run stand with Jasprit Bumrah before the fast-bowler tried to play a smart shot and perished. The right-handed batsman then played some big shots before becoming the last Indian wicket to fall. Before that, he scored 65, more than what the other ten players scored combined. The sublime knock came off 87 balls and was studded with ten fours and a couple of sixes.
