India skipper Virat Kohli has admitted that it would not be easy for him to decide the openers when Rohit Sharma returns to the team during the ODI series against Australia. Rohit Sharma has been rested for the upcoming three-match T20I series against Sri Lanka which has made things easier for the team-management.

In Rohit Sharma’s absence, KL Rahul and Shikhar Dhawan will be opening the innings. However, once Rohit returns, the team will have to pick one between his long-time partner Dhawan and the in-form Rahul. While Rohit and Dhawan have been doing a fantastic job as openers since 2013, the latter has struggled to get going especially in T20Is in recent times.

Injuries have also made things tougher for Dhawan. And in his absence, Rahul has done exceedingly well. Rahul was promoted as an opener in the World Cup when Dhawan was injured and the former responded by scoring one century and two fifties.

In the last assignment against West Indies, the right-handed batsman scored two fifties in the T20I series before hitting a century in the subsequent ODI series. Dhawan, on the other hand, has struggled to do well since returning to action after the World Cup and time is running out for him.

With the T20 World Cup not very far away, the senior opener needs to deliver quickly as he is facing a stiff competition from Rahul.

Virat Kohli on opening pair:

Ahead of the first T20I against Sri Lanka in Guwahati, Virat Kohli was asked about the opening combination the team would prefer once Rohit Sharma returns. In reply, Virat Kohli failed to give a clear-cut answer as he admitted that he would be in a difficult position once his deputy returns from rest.

“As far as the series is concerned, it’s pretty straightforward. Both of them will start (Dhawan and Rahul). But when Rohit comes back, you know, it’s going to be a difficult thing to address because Shikhar has been an experienced player but KL is playing so well,” said Virat Kohli.

“So I think we’ll have to decide what’s the best combination that we can go with and who are the best eleven to take the field,” he added.
