Veteran Indian spinner Harbhajan Singh believes Sanju Samson should be tried out by India as the number four batsman. India are struggling to find a suitable player for that important position since 2017 but are yet to succeed. Ever since Yuvraj Singh was dropped from the side in 2017, the team has tried out a number of batsmen without much success.

The team-management has now pinned its hopes on highly-rated Rishabh Pant. However, the way the wicketkeeper-batsman recently performed against West Indies, one can say that he is still not ready for that crucial position. Harbhajan Singh now feels that Samson should be given a chance at that position.

Harbhajan Singh’s comments came after Samson’s stunning innings for India A against South Africa A on Friday. Samson blasted 91 from just 48 balls to propel India A to a convincing 36-run win (DLS method). Samson was in his elements as he toyed with the bowlers during his 135-run second wicket partnership with India regular Shikhar Dhawan (51 off 36 balls). His knock contained 6 fours and seven sixes.

Soon after the knock, Harbhajan Singh took to Twitter to state that he cannot see any reason why the youngster cannot bat at number four in ODIs. Praising Samson, Harbhajan wrote:

“Why not @IamSanjuSamson at number 4 in odi.. with good technique and good head on his shoulders.. well played today anyways against SA A”

India A, meanwhile, wrapped up the series 4-1 after the impressive win in the final game. The game was reduced to 20-over per side due to rain. Batting first, India A finished on 204 for 4 in just 20 overs thanks to Samson’s whirlwind knock.

India A were off to a poor start and lost opener Prashant Chopra for just two. However, senior opener Shikhar Dhawan (51) and Samson added 135 runs for the second wicket to put the hosts on top. The hosts eventually finished on 204 for 4. In reply, South Africa were all out for 168.
